hey...kelso here... OK so can i just say that i didnt MEAN to post a huge twilight pic...i set it as my profile picture and then it showed up all huge!!! aah! ok so we just finished up a DNA experiment. what it was all about was that apparently someone stole Mr Finleys moon rock. The clues we had to who took it were someone with a hoodie (yeah THAT narrowed it down) someone tall and with dirty blonde hair...everyone at my table just kind of looked right at me...but mr finley said my hair was too blonde so that was good. the suspects turned out to be ellen, Stephen S, Brian C, Mary L, Jordan, and Nick D. OK so ellen knew it was mary (good job being smart ellen!) but of course we would do the DNA test anyway for learning purposes :) it was actually kind of cool...but basically the experiment was this... get a swab and swab your cheek, like in the cheek cell lab, then you take the swab and put in this little test tube filled with lysosome buffer then swirled it around then did it again. Then when you put the blue dye in it you can see the DNA and it is SO COOL! lol i don't know i just thought this experiment was cool because it reminded of a law and order episode... i hate that show...but anyway back on topic... each group did that and then we gave the test tubes to this high school science class and they did an electrophoresis thing on the DNA and electrophoresis is what you do to see the DNA and to separate the fragments and heres how you do it: 1. make the gel 2. set up gel apparatus 3. load DNA sample into gel 4.hook up electrical current and run the gel 5. stain gel and analyze results (i could go into more detail but this post is gonna be long enough as it is!) and then we could see the prints from the DNA which was basically a series of lines left by the DNA. obviously everyones was different so we had to compare the suspects DNA to the DNA sample left by the culprit. the only problem with this method was that the DNA left behind could be contaminated and it could have been left by another person who didn't steal the moon rock. So the 2 that were most similair to the DNA sample (which was a strand of hair) were Mary's and Nick's. Each only had one difference. Mary's was alot smaller of a difference though. The difference in Mary's DNA to the sample was that the 4th line on hers was slightly shorter then the 4th line on the sample. and the difference in Nick's was that his had one line that the sample didn't. Ellen's first 3 lines were the same but the rest weren't even close. Stephens was was kind of close but 3 of the lines were different, Brian's was similair in a really weird way, 1/2 of his lines were the same and the other 1/2 were just a little higher or lower than the line on the sample that was across from it. If that makes sense...so in the end we figured that Mary was the one because her DNA closest matched the DNA left behind, and it WAS her DNA. but she didn't steal the moon rock because the whole thing was fake (real shocker there right?) so that was basically our experiment. And by the way my procedure is probably kind of messed up so sorry about that. And thank you to the 6 peepl following my blog bcuz wen i logged on and saw 6 followers i felt very special! ^_^ haha. so tomorrow I will see you all in science class and today is the first day of Hannukah!!! (i celebrate it yet I can't spell it) so HAPPY HANNUKAH! and there are 4 days i think until christmas so happy almost christmas! have a gr8 rest of the weekend and be good children so you don't get coal!!!
